January 2010 -Remembering Frida The Office Kitty

Sadly, our young office kitty Frida was hit by a car outside of our offices on Wednesday, January 14th and did not make it. Frida came to us in the early part of 2009 as a stray kitten. She quickly became a vital part of our staff providing us with comfort, encouragement, entertainment, and laughter for hours. Her sudden and unexpected death has left a hole in our staff and all of our hearts.

SMALL LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS MAY BE HERE TO STAY

The current plein air rage, with clubs and “paint outs,” may fade somewhat with the passing of time, but small, on-location landscape/cityscape paintings aren’t going away anytime soon – rather the opposite.
I am satisfied that there is a more durable underlying trend afoot. To the extent that art schools comprise an engine that drives long-term art trends in America, up-and-coming young representational artists of today are the harbingers of popular painting directions and they are increasingly painting in plein air. They are setting the trends today, just as the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, Bay Area Figurative artists and Abstract Expressionists were in their day
Anyone reading the current academic art press, like Art in America, Art News or my favorite, New American Painting, can’t help but note one growing trend among prominent young artists coming out of MFA programs around the country, toward small format paintings depicting observed reality. Small image sizes from 3 x 3 up to 24 x 24 are becoming more and more common.

Remembering Stanley Sporny
Sadly our friend and business associate, Stanley Sporny, died unexpectedly at the age of 62 while walking in his beloved West Virginia woods on October 22, 2008.
A dedicated and prolific oil painter, Stanley Sporny was a professor of art at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, for more than 20 years. Beginning in the lat 60s, professor Sporny responded to his own sensitization to traditional oil painting materials by developing his own non-toxic alternatives called Sporny Solution™.
He earned a BFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and an MFA from Philadelphia College of Art in 1972. He traveled to Sri Lanka in 1972 on a Fulbright Grant, where he lived and painted for nine years. (Yes, he knew Arthur C. Clarke – even painted his portrait!)
